Mission Briefing: Breakfast, Welcome & Opening Session
9:00 - 10:00 a.m.
Start the day by connecting with colleagues over breakfast before we officially kick off this year's Staff Professional Development Conference. Through welcome remarks from university leadership and an inspiring keynote from Northrop Grumman Technical Fellow Ernie Kyed, we'll introduce this year's theme, Let's Launch!, and set the stage for a day centered on optimism, forward momentum, confidence, and collective strength. Together, we'll celebrate the knowledge and experiences we each bring, explore new possibilities, and prepare for a day of learning and collaboration.
Welcome Remarks:

Morning Keynote:
Launching Cassini: Solving a Showstopper on the Way to Saturn
In October 1997, NASA launched Cassini—an extraordinarily ambitious mission to orbit Saturn for 20 years and deliver a probe to its largest moon, Titan. Getting Cassini off the ground meant orchestrating thousands of people, precision hardware, exotic fuels, and complex logistics, all converging on a single flawless instant: launch. Cassini flew on the Titan IVB, a new heavy鈥憀ift rocket whose first launch in February 1997 marked a major leap in national security capability for the U.S. Air Force. That inaugural flight was a success in almost every respect—but post鈥慺light data revealed an unexplained load event on the solid rocket motor nozzle during ignition. With Cassini scheduled as only the second Titan IVB launch, this anomaly posed a serious risk. The stakes couldn't have been higher. Cassini’s trajectory window was so constrained that even a few weeks’ delay would have meant scrapping the mission and waiting 18 years for Saturn to realign. Even shorter delays threatened to erase key scientific objectives. This talk tells the story of how a group of companies, hundreds of engineers, and multiple government organizations worked together to diagnose the anomaly, implement corrective actions, and preserve an on鈥憈ime, safe launch. It is a case study in grit, determination, cross鈥憃rganizational cooperation, precise planning, and relentless optimism—plus a little bit of luck—required to solve a major problem and send an epic journey of scientific discovery on its way.
Meet the Speaker:
Ernie Kyed
Technical Fellow
Northrup Grumman
Ernie鈥疜yed is a Technical Fellow at Northrop鈥疓rumman with nearly 40鈥痽ears of experience in solid鈥憄ropulsion launch systems.鈥疕e has progressed from system test engineer to systems鈥慹ngineering manager and recently led the directorate responsible for propulsion鈥憇upport hardware—including thrust鈥憊ector control, power, instrumentation, ordnance, and test equipment.鈥疎rnie has played key roles in major programs such as NASA’s Cassini launch and the Artemis moon鈥憆eturn initiative.
He is married to a Weber鈥疭tate alum and is the proud father of two—an architect daughter and a recent Weber State graduate son.鈥疻hen he’s not at work, Ernie enjoys hiking, backpacking, and camping, but his favorite role is simply being a dad.
